1945 WWII USS Indianapolis survivor's letter found in book, honored by family with flag raising in Minnesota.
A letter written by US Navy Chief Watertender Robert Makowski, who perished on the USS Indianapolis during WWII, has been discovered and honored by his surviving family with a flag raising and display at the Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center in Minnesota. The letter, found in a used book, details Makowski's trip across the US and experiences in Los Angeles before serving on the USS Indianapolis, which famously delivered components of the atomic bomb "Little Boy" to Tinian Island before its sinking. Out of 1,195 crew members, only 316 survived the ordeal, including Makowski's fellow Duluth man James Norberg.
