U.S. Marine Sgt. Robert F. Van Heck, missing since World War II, has been identified 80 years later after his remains were found on Betio Island in the Tarawa Atoll, where he died on the first day of battle in 1943. His identification was confirmed through DNA analysis, and he will be buried in Illinois on January 7, 2025. Despite the identification of nearly 1,700 previously unknown WWII soldiers, over 70,000 remain unaccounted for.
