21-year-old Royal Navy pilot Douglas David Smith died in a Grumman Hellcat crash in Northern Ireland's Sperrin mountains on the day of Hiroshima bombing.

On August 6, 1945, Petty Officer Douglas David Smith, a 21-year-old Royal Navy pilot, died when his Grumman Hellcat crashed in the Sperrin mountains, Northern Ireland, coinciding with the U.S. atomic bombing of Hiroshima. Recently, aviation archaeologist Jonny McNee and Foyle College students recovered the wreckage. McNee is now seeking to locate Smith's relatives as part of ongoing efforts to preserve military aviation history in the region.
