French climber Benjamin Vedrines broke the previous record for the fastest ascent of K2, the world's second-highest mountain, reaching the summit in 10 hours, 59 minutes, and 59 seconds. Vedrines, using the "alpine style" of minimal rope use, shattered Benoit Chamoux's 1986 record of 23 hours. Despite challenging weather conditions, Vedrines successfully summited K2, which has a fatality rate of one in four attempts.
