90-year-old Albert faced a nine-month ordeal trying to get over £1,000 back from British Gas after their pre-pay meter was found to be faulty. Albert paid £1,074 into the meter between September 1 and October 25, but the company admitted its mistake only after he contacted the Local Democracy Reporting Service. British Gas then agreed to pay Albert £1,089.49, including a 'goodwill gesture', within 24 hours.
