Illinois plans to return stolen land to the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation, originally taken from Chief Shab-eh-nay in 1829.

Illinois may soon return land stolen from a Prairie Band Potawatomi chief in 1829, 175 years after it originally occurred. The U.S. government took the land from Chief Shab-eh-nay while he was away visiting relatives, and around 1848, sold it to white settlers. To rectify the situation, Illinois plans to transfer a 1,500-acre state park, named after Shab-eh-nay, to the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation.
