The Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation seeks to regain ancestral land in DeKalb County, Illinois, with a bill in the state's General Assembly proposing to return 1,500 acres of park land to the tribe. The tribe, which once occupied much of the Great Lakes region, was forcibly removed in the 19th century and is now headquartered in northeast Kansas. Shabbona Lake State Park, named after a direct ancestor of the tribe's chairman, would be impacted by the proposed land return.
