Minnesota Governor Tim Walz transferred Upper Sioux Agency State Park to the Upper Sioux Community on March 15, 2024.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz led a formal ceremony on March 15, 2024, to transfer ownership of the Upper Sioux Agency State Park to the Upper Sioux Community. The land return marks a significant achievement for the community, as the park was once a site for the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862, where tribal lands were taken along the Minnesota River following the conflict. The Upper Sioux Community hopes that the return of the land will not only heal the past but also inspire other Native communities to reclaim their lost lands that were unjustly stolen from them.
