Cheyenne River Youth Project, a Native American-led nonprofit, purchases 40 acres adjacent to Bear Butte State Park in South Dakota, supporting the Land Back movement.
Native American-led nonprofit, Cheyenne River Youth Project, has purchased 40 acres of land in South Dakota's Black Hills area, adjacent to Bear Butte State Park. The purchase aligns with the growing Land Back movement, which seeks to return ancestral lands to Indigenous people. The Lakota Nation, who consider the area sacred, previously had their land seized by the U.S. government in the late 19th century, and a Supreme Court ruling in 1980 determined the U.S. had illegally taken the Black Hills. The nonprofit's acquisition aims to provide easier access to sacred sites for Indigenous people, as the distance and high prices of lodging prevent them from visiting these areas.
