Illinois recognizes the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation as a federally recognized tribal nation after the U.S. Department of the Interior places Shab-eh-nay Reservation land into trust.

Illinois now hosts a federally recognized tribal nation, the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation, after the U.S. Department of the Interior placed portions of the Shab-eh-nay Reservation into trust. The federal government had illegally auctioned off 1,280 acres of the Prairie Band's reservation land 175 years ago. The Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation is headquartered in Kansas but has ancestral ties to the Illinois land.
