Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe restores 11,000 acres of land into tribal boundaries, reversing a 1940s land seizure by the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs.
The Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe has celebrated the restoration of over 11,000 acres of land into tribal boundaries, after more than 70 years since the federal government illegally transferred the land away. This land restoration is a result of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe Reservation Restoration Act, sponsored by U.S. Senator Tina Smith and signed into law in 2020, reversing the 1940s land seizure by the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs.
