The Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center in Superior, Wisconsin, and the non-profit World War II historical preservation group Pacific Wrecks have announced a search for the wreckage of WWII ace fighter pilot Richard Bong's plane, the Lockheed P-38 Lightning nicknamed "Marge," in the South Pacific. Bong, who grew up in Poplar, Wisconsin, shot down 40 Japanese aircraft during the war and plastered a blown-up portrait of his girlfriend, Marjorie Vattendahl, on the nose of the plane.
