A two-alarm fire broke out in a four-story apartment building in Columbia Heights, D.C., on New Year's Eve, critically injuring two women and displacing 35 residents. Firefighters rescued the victims and battled the flames that affected the top floor and attic. The displaced residents were temporarily housed in buses while the cause of the fire is investigated. Separately, a fire in Northwest D.C. damaged six homes and injured three firefighters on Sunday morning, with no civilian injuries reported.
