Queensland University of Technology (QUT) developed world's first genetically-modified (GM) banana, QCAV-4, to combat Panama Disease (Tropical Race 4, TR4), which threatens the global banana market. QCAV-4, a Cavendish variety, is the first GM fruit assessed and approved by Food Standards Australia and New Zealand for commercial release and consumption, protecting Australia's $1.3bn banana industry. QUT now focuses on developing a non-GM, gene-edited version resistant to TR4 and other diseases.
