China approves 17 gene-edited and GM crop varieties to boost food security and reduce imports.

China has approved five gene-edited and 12 genetically modified crop varieties, including soybean, corn, and cotton, to boost food production and reduce imports. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs awarded safety certificates for these crops, which use gene editing to improve traits, seen by some as safer than traditional genetic modification. The approvals aim to enhance food security and increase domestic crop yields. Safety certificates are valid for five years.
