Japan's PM Kishida apologized to forced sterilization victims under a defunct eugenics law and pledged new compensation.

Japan's PM Fumio Kishida apologized to victims of forced sterilization under a now-defunct eugenics law (1948-1996). At a meeting with over 100 victims, Kishida acknowledged the government's heavy responsibility in enforcing the law and pledged to decide on a new compensation framework soon. The Supreme Court ruled earlier this month that Japan's eugenics law was unconstitutional.
