Western Australian inquiry finds ongoing trauma and irreparable damage from historical forced adoption practices.
A Western Australian parliamentary inquiry revealed the ongoing trauma and "irreparable damage" caused by historical forced adoption practices. Unmarried pregnant women were coerced into giving their babies up for adoption, with pressure also on fathers and grandparents. The report found that some children were placed for adoption without consent, and authorities used deceptive and unlawful methods to obtain it. The inquiry recommends a redress scheme, targeted counselling, psychological support, and a direct personal apology to those affected.
