Japan's Supreme Court orders government to compensate forcibly sterilized victims under a defunct Eugenics Protection Law.

Japan's Supreme Court has ordered the government to pay compensation to about a dozen victims who were forcibly sterilized under a now-defunct Eugenics Protection Law. The 1948 law aimed to eliminate the offspring of people with disabilities and was considered "unconstitutional" by the court. An estimated 25,000 people were sterilized without consent between the 1950s and 1970s. The court also ruled that the compensation offered by the government in 2019 was insufficient and urged the government to consider a new compensation scheme.
