32-year-old Gearoid Coughlan, with severe mental illness, was sentenced to ten years in prison for attempting to murder his mother. Coughlan, who has schizophrenia, will undergo six years of supervision by probation and psychiatric services upon release, or risk an additional two years. His mother criticized Ireland's mental health services, stating that people with paranoid schizophrenia are allowed to live in the community without adequate care and support.
