California poultry companies agreed to pay $4.8m in back wages, damages, and give up $1m in profits due to child labor and wage violations, found by a Labor Department investigation. Children as young as 14 were employed in dangerous jobs, including using sharp knives to debone poultry. The settlement is one of the largest wage violation settlements ever reached for US poultry workers.
