Australian red meat sector reduced net GHG emissions by 78% since 2005, primarily due to land use impacts.

The Australian red meat sector has reduced its net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 78% since 2005, according to a report by CSIRO, Australia's National Science Agency. In 2021, net greenhouse gas emissions from the red meat industry were 31 Mt CO2-equivalent, a significant decrease from the reference year of 2005. The report attributes this reduction primarily to impacts in the land use sector, including low rates of land clearing and increased forest regrowth, which have contributed to a larger pool of carbon on land associated with livestock management.
