1,000 prison beds added in NT to combat overcrowding, relocate children, convert facilities for women, and improve rehabilitation.

The Northern Territory government plans to add 1,000 prison beds to combat overcrowding and enhance infrastructure. Deputy Chief Minister Gerard Maley outlined a strategy involving relocating children from Alice Springs Youth Detention Centre to Darwin, converting that facility into a women’s prison, and returning 200 prisoners to the Don Dale Youth Detention Centre. The changes aim to improve rehabilitation and reduce the projected prison population to over 3,000 by 2028.
