Justice Minister Naomi Long announced an increase in Northern Ireland's prison staff due to the rising prisoner population, which has grown by over 500 since July 2021. This increase is causing the need for 75 additional Prison Service staff, costing £3.5m annually. Nearly half of the inmates are on remand, and as a contingency, a disused cell block at Maghaberry prison is being prepared for reopening.
