European astronomers produce detailed infrared Milky Way map using 200,000 VISTA telescope images.

Astronomers at the European Southern Observatory have produced the most detailed infrared map of the Milky Way, cataloging over 1.5 billion celestial objects. This extensive project, led by Dante Minniti, utilized 200,000 images taken over 13 years with the VISTA telescope, covering an area equivalent to 8,600 full moons. The map offers new insights into the galaxy's structure and evolution by penetrating dust and gas that obscure many regions.
