Scientists find more supermassive black holes hidden by dust, doubling previous estimates.

Recent research suggests there may be significantly more supermassive black holes in the universe than previously estimated, many of which are hidden by thick clouds of gas and dust. Scientists used NASA's Infrared Astronomy Satellite and the X-ray telescope NuSTAR to detect infrared emissions from these obscured black holes. The study indicates that hidden black holes could make up around 35% of all supermassive black holes, which is higher than the previous estimate of about 15%. This discovery could help researchers understand how these black holes grow and influence galaxy evolution.
