97.96% of the withdrawn Rs 2,000 notes in India were returned, leaving Rs 7,261 crore unclaimed.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) revealed that 97.96% of the Rs 2,000 banknotes withdrawn from circulation on May 19, 2023, have been returned, leaving Rs 7,261 crore still held by the public. Deposits and exchanges were allowed at banks until October 7, 2023, and at RBI offices since May 19. From October 9, 2023, these offices also accepted the notes for direct bank account deposits, facilitating a smooth transition for the public.
