98.12% of Rs 2000 banknotes withdrawn in 2023 have been returned to RBI, with a small amount still in use.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) reports that 98.12% of Rs 2000 banknotes have been returned since their withdrawal was announced on May 19, 2023. The remaining notes, valued at Rs 6,691 crore, are still in circulation. While the initial deposit period ended on October 7, 2023, the RBI continues to accept these notes at 19 issue offices and through India Post for deposit into bank accounts. The Rs 2000 notes remain legal tender.
