As of October 2024, 98.04% of ₹2000 notes in India have been returned amid their phased withdrawal.
As of October 31, 2024, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) reported that 98.04% of ₹2000 banknotes have been returned, with only ₹6,970 crore remaining in circulation. The withdrawal began on May 19, 2023, due to an adequate supply of other denominations and the limited lifespan of the notes. Introduced in November 2016 to replace higher denominations, the ₹2000 notes remain legal tender despite their phased withdrawal.
