2.2% of Rs 2000 banknotes, or Rs 7,755 crore, are still in circulation eight months after the withdrawal deadline, according to the Reserve Bank of India. This means 97.82% of the total value of high-value Rs 2000 notes have been returned to the banking system by end of May 2024. The total value of Rs 2000 banknotes in circulation was Rs 3.56 lakh crore when the withdrawal was announced in May 2023. The facility for deposit and/or exchange of Rs 2000 banknotes was available at all bank branches until October 7, 2023.
