Chinese scientists discover a new species of vampire squid in the South China Sea, making it the second known globally.

Chinese scientists have identified a new species of vampire squid (Vampyroteuthis infernalis) in the South China Sea, making it only the second known species of vampire squid globally. The researchers collected a specimen similar to V. infernalis between 800 and 1,000 meters deep, conducting morphological and phylogenetic analyses to confirm the differences from the single known species. The discovery was published in the English academic journal Zoological Systematics.
