1 km deep-sea squid (Taningia danae) with bioluminescent headlights captured on video during research cruise in the central Pacific.

Scientists from The University of Western Australia and Kelpie Geosciences have captured a rare deep-sea squid, Taningia danae, on video in its natural habitat at depths of over 1 km underwater. The squid, also known as the Dana squid, is known for its bright bioluminescent "headlights" that it flashes during attacks to dazzle prey. The footage was captured during a research cruise in the central Pacific, where conditions are near pitch black.
