Scientists on China's submersible Jiaolong found new species and alarming marine waste in the Pacific.

International scientists on China's deep-sea submersible Jiaolong completed a 45-day expedition in the Western Pacific Ocean, discovering over a dozen new deep-sea species. This was the first time foreign scientists used Jiaolong, which has been upgraded with high-definition cameras and a siphon sampler. The team also found alarming levels of marine waste, underlining the need for more research to protect the deep-sea ecosystem.
