540-million-year-old large sponge fossil found in Hunan Province offers insights into early sponge evolution.

Chinese researchers found a well-preserved 540 million-year-old large sponge fossil in Hunan Province, offering insights into early sponge evolution. Measuring 4 cm x 3.5 cm, the fossil is in excellent condition with siliceous spicules and suggests high primary productivity in the Cambrian ocean, potentially supporting other species. Sponges, Earth's oldest multicellular animals, have been in oceans for 600 million years.
