UK study finds epidural analgesia during labour reduces severe maternal morbidity by 35%.
UK researchers found epidural analgesia during labour is linked to a 35% decrease in severe maternal morbidity (SMM) in a population-based study of 567,216 women. Epidural use reduced SMM (4.3 per 1000 births) and SMM with critical care admission. The risk reduction was larger for women with medical indications and preterm births. The study recommends epidural use for women with known risk factors.
