2007-2019 Scottish NHS study finds epidurals during labor reduce serious childbirth complications by 35%.

A study published in The BMJ found that epidurals during labor are associated with a 35% reduction in serious childbirth complications, including heart attacks, heart failure, and hysterectomies. The research, involving 567,216 women who gave birth in Scottish NHS hospitals between 2007 and 2019, revealed that epidurals were particularly effective in women with pre-existing medical or obstetric conditions or those who went into labor prematurely. The findings suggest that increasing access to epidurals could help reverse the growing trend of deaths and injuries in UK maternity wards.
