Critically endangered North Pacific right whale sighted off California coast by NOAA researchers.
A critically endangered North Pacific right whale, with an estimated population of fewer than 500, was spotted off the coast of Marin County, California by researchers aboard the NOAA ship "Bell M. Shimada". The rare whale was identified using photographs taken by the research team and confirmed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The North Pacific right whale population faces ongoing threats from entanglement in fishing gear, vessel strikes, climate change impacts, ocean noise, and oil and gas development.
