Endangered North Atlantic right whale "catalog #1950" found dead off Virginia coast; 40th death in ongoing mortality event.

An endangered North Atlantic right whale, known as "catalog #1950", was found dead off the coast of Virginia. The mother whale, at least 35 years old, was last seen healthy with her newborn calf in February off the coast of Florida. The calf has not been located, and it is not expected to survive without its mother. This brings the total number of deaths in the ongoing "unusual mortality event" impacting the species to 40.
