Guatemalan court releases journalist José Rubén Zamora, founder of El Periodico, from jail after overturning money laundering charges.
A Guatemalan court has released journalist José Rubén Zamora, founder of El Periodico newspaper, after nearly two years in jail on money laundering charges. Zamora's initial six-year sentence was overturned by another court, and a new trial has been ordered. The Guatemalan court ruled that there was no longer justification to keep him in jail, as he was not considered a flight risk or a threat to the investigation. Zamora will spend the rest of his time before a new trial on conditional release. Press freedom groups had previously criticized his prosecution as politically motivated, with El Periodico publishing several investigations critical of former President Alejandro Giammattei.
