16-day methane pollution from Queensland's Hail Creek coal mine exceeds Glencore's reported annual emission.

In 16 days, Queensland's Hail Creek open cut coal mine released more methane pollution than Glencore reported for an entire year, according to satellite images. The Australian Conservation Foundation reports that the mine, located in the Bowen Basin, released methane emissions equivalent to eight million cows. This is over 80 times more damaging to the atmosphere than carbon dioxide over 20 years. A total of 61 methane plumes, or billowing clouds of the potent gas, were observed across Australia in 2023.
