Indonesia's major coal mining companies, responsible for half of the nation's coal production, underreport methane emissions, significantly impacting sustainability efforts and decarbonisation.

A report by Ember reveals that Indonesia's major coal mining companies, responsible for half of the nation's coal production, are failing to account for methane emissions in their emissions inventory. Methane, a potent greenhouse gas, has a warming effect 28 times greater than CO2 over a 100-year timescale. The report found that only four of the 10 major coal mining companies disclosed coal mine methane (CMM) emissions, which could exceed eight million tonnes of CO2 equivalent, more than a third of their potential total emissions. Methane emissions underreporting undermines sustainability efforts and overlooks opportunities for emissions reduction, essential for coal mining decarbonisation and meeting national and international standards.
