British Museum sues ex-curator Peter Higgs over alleged theft of 2,000 items.
The British Museum is suing a former curator, Peter Higgs, over allegations of theft of nearly 2,000 items, including ancient gems and gold jewelry, from its collections. Higgs was fired in July 2023 after over 1,800 items were found missing. The museum accuses Higgs of abusing his position of trust and selling the stolen artifacts online. The High Court has ordered Higgs to list or return any stolen items within four weeks and disclose his eBay and PayPal records.
