Biden administration finalizes higher standard for ‘Product of USA’ meat label.

The Biden administration has finalized a rule requiring meat, poultry, or eggs labeled as U.S. products to originate from animals born, raised, slaughtered, and processed within the country. The rule, which aims to enhance competition in the meat industry, addresses concerns raised by U.S. ranchers who believed the voluntary label used by companies that processed or slaughtered animals in the U.S. but raised them abroad was misleading. Producers must comply with the rule by January 1, 2026, and the USDA has also announced $9.5 million in grants for 42 projects to expand small-scale local meat processing capacity.
