Independent lab Valisure detects high benzene levels in acne treatments from major brands, petitions FDA for recall, investigation, and industry guidance revisions.
High levels of the cancer-causing chemical benzene have been detected in some acne treatments from brands such as Clinique, Clearasil, Proactiv, PanOxyl, Walgreens, and Walmart. Independent lab Valisure found benzene in these products and filed a petition with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requesting a recall, an investigation, and revisions to industry guidance. The FDA has not yet commented on the matter.
