Benzene found in store-brand generic cold relief medicines, including Mucinex, at major US chains due to cheaper carbomer alternatives.

Bloomberg analysis finds benzene, a carcinogen, in store-brand generic cold relief medicines including Mucinex at major US chains such as CVS, Walmart, and Walgreens. The inactive ingredient carbomer, used for extended-release effect, contains benzene in store-brand versions due to cheaper alternatives. Brand-name Mucinex uses a carbomer without benzene. The US FDA plans to phase out benzene by 2026 but has not yet responded to whether it is currently investigating this issue.
