New law seeks to enhance healthcare for young people exiting prison with screenings and support.

A new federal law aims to improve healthcare access for young people leaving prison by providing medical and dental screenings to Medicaid or CHIP-eligible youths 30 days before or after they leave a correctional facility, and continuing case management services for 30 days post-release. The law, effective since January 1, 2023, applies to youths up to age 21, or 26 for those in foster care, and is designed to prevent health crises and reduce the likelihood of reoffending. Implementation may take time due to required changes in correctional facilities' healthcare provision.
