Nebraska's prison system audit recommends improvements to save $3.9M and expedite compensation.

Nebraska's prison system faces challenges including high medical costs for inmates, excessive staff overtime, improper handling of inmate trust funds, and control weaknesses in pharmacy operations. A new audit report recommends NDCS improve its Medicaid application process, implement a new Health Services Electronic Health Records system, move the inmate accounting system off the mainframe onto a new electronic system, and revise policies. If these improvements are made, the state could save approximately $3.9 million and expedite compensation for inmates and victims from work done during imprisonment or work release.
