A prisoner in Waikato's Spring Hill Corrections Facility is hospitalized after starting a cell fire.

A prisoner is in serious condition after starting a fire in his cell at Spring Hill Corrections Facility in Waikato on Friday at 4:45 pm. The fire was extinguished by the sprinkler system, and the inmate was removed by staff. He was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. The acting general manager, Alan Lamb, stated that the cause cannot be disclosed due to security reasons. The prisoner will face misconduct charges, and no other inmates or staff were affected.
