Energy firm AGL fined $25M for overcharging 483 welfare recipients from 2016 to 2021.

Energy giant AGL has been fined $25 million by Australia's Federal Court for overcharging 483 welfare recipients through Centrepay between 2016 and 2021. The court found AGL and its subsidiaries breached National Energy Retail Rules over 16,000 times, failing to promptly notify and refund customers. AGL may appeal the fine, the largest imposed by the Australian Energy Regulator since 2022. The court ordered AGL to implement new processes to prevent future overcharges.
