Australia reports over 900,000 people identify as LGBTI+, with younger generations more likely to do so.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics has released its first-ever data on the LGBTI+ population, estimating that about 4.5% of Australians aged 16 and over, or more than 900,000 people, identify as LGBTI+. Younger Australians are more likely to identify as LGBTI+, with nearly 10% of those aged 16 to 24 identifying as such. The data from nearly 45,000 survey respondents will be used in the 2026 Census to better represent and understand the diverse communities.
