New Zealand installs fish passage to aid native species migration at Ruakākā weir.

A new fish passage, a 25-meter rock ramp, is being installed at the Ruakākā weir in New Zealand to help migratory native fish navigate around the barrier. Funded by the Ministry for the Environment and developed by a partnership including the Whangarei District Council, NIWA, and Australasian Fish Passage Services, the project aims to improve fish migration, which has been severely impacted by the current structure. Future surveys will measure the effectiveness of the new design in aiding fish movement between freshwater and ocean habitats.
